Experiential learning is an educational approach that emphasizes learning through experience, reflection, and application. Instead of passively absorbing information, students actively engage in activities, projects, and experiences that allow them to apply theoretical knowledge in practical contexts. Now, this approach does not mean that students never learn the theoretical. Instead, it tries to complement the theory. Experiential learning encourages learners to connect theory with practice, fostering deeper understanding and retention.

Experiential learning puts students at the center of the learning process, encouraging active participation and engagement. When learners are actively involved in solving problems, conducting experiments, or tackling real-world challenges, they develop a deeper understanding of concepts and principles. This hands-on approach not only enhances comprehension but also promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills. For example, just telling students about the iodine clock reaction (an interesting chemical experiment in which two clear substances mix and, after some amount of time (which can be experimented with), the clear liquid turns a dark shade of blue) is not very interesting. But allowing students the opportunity (safely, of course) to try out different concentrations of reagents to get different timings of the reaction is more interesting for everyone involved. Not to mention that the students will internalize more of the information.

While chemistry experiments are probably beyond the scope of a tutoring session, students can ask their tutors for more real-world applications of the subjects they are studying for a more in-depth understanding.

Traditional classroom settings sometimes struggle to convey the real-world relevance of academic concepts. For example, many students wonder “when will I use algebra or Pythagorean Theorem in my adult life?”. But, understanding that algebra and triangles are everywhere in life (including, realizing your mistake when ordering a couch that is too large to fit into the elevator). Experiential learning bridges this gap by providing opportunities for students to apply what they learn in authentic contexts. Whether it’s designing a marketing campaign, building a prototype, conducting scientific research, or using Pythagorean Theorem to order the right sized couch, experiential learning connects theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, making learning meaningful and memorable.

Many experiential learning activities are collaborative in nature, requiring students to work in teams to achieve common goals. Whether this be through completing different tasks to make sure the job is done or doing the same tasks together, learners hone their interpersonal skills, learn to communicate effectively, and appreciate diverse perspectives. These teamwork experiences mirror real-world dynamics and prepare students for success in professional environments.

Experiential learning often involves encountering challenges and setbacks. By navigating these obstacles, with or without the help of their teacher, students develop adaptability, resilience, and a growth mindset. They learn to embrace failure as a natural part of the learning process and emerge with increased confidence and perseverance. Not every project or assignment will have a clear goal. For some, students have to find what they want to achieve with it and learn from the experience.

The experiential learning journey extends beyond the classroom, instilling in students a passion for lifelong learning. By experiencing the intrinsic rewards of discovery, exploration, and mastery, learners develop a curiosity-driven approach to knowledge acquisition. They become self-directed learners who actively seek out new opportunities for growth and development.

By engaging students in authentic experiences, connecting theory with practice, and fostering essential skills, experiential learning equips learners with the tools they need to thrive in academia and beyond.
